Love (A poem for mary)
The angel Gabriel appeared unto the virgin Mary in the heat of her old age
On a dusty dawn in Galilee
To say that she will have a son
Jesus will be his name
But how
But why her
Mary
Mary
He told her not to be afraid
Ain’t it everyone’s expectation for a woman to be brave
She was favored he said
How
Why
A virgin carrying the son of God
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
He said
He will do great things he said
The spirit of the Lord will move upon her
Was it a question, Mary
Did you have a choice
Did you doubt
Did you ever fear
What were your first words to Joseph
What were your first words to yourself
A virgin carrying the son of God
Did favor ever feel like burden
Did the symphony of silence crescendo as Gabriel delivered the news
Mary
Mary
His name will be Jesus
Jesus
They will call him the son of God
Did you know
You birthed a revolutionary
A revolution
He will do great things
Not everyone will love him
Did you know
Did you know
What a calling
Thank you, Mary
Did we ever thank you
For carrying the son of God in your blessed womb
The son of God they will call him
He will do great things
He will do the greatest thing
And you will shed tears and witness
Did you know
Did we ever thank you
Thank you, Mary
Thank you
